It come first as a murmur. A hushed questioning of the fact that every castle and palace of the Cransnikovs rested in Tholeland. Though as venerable as those ancient fortresses may be, they were undeniable old weapons of wars long past. And so the murmurings began, why not construct a new palace? One on the mainland. One grand enough to fully display the glory of the Cransnikovs.
Soon, the murmurs grew as more and more Tholes began to clamor for a new palace. While such talk was not unheard of from the nobility (even if their degree of agitation was a bit surprising), the true shock was the pure enthusiasm from the peasantry and the admittedly weaker approval of the middle class both swept up by a growing wave of Tholish nationalism.
Paired with national interest, a desire arose from the Tholish intellectual class to have this castle be a testament to the German people. Not merely a monument of Tholish exceptionalism, the castle should take from and honor all Germanic peoples serving as their great statement of cultural greatness.
Soon enough the calls became to much for the king to ignore and to the mass jubilation of the Tholish people, King Ludwig announced the beginning of plans to construct a palace fit for the Tholish nation.
While plans and ideas are drawn up, the increasingly costly and near ridiculous shopping lists requested by the architect teams are piling up on the shoulders of a Tholish bureaucrat Wilfred Yarbourgh. To add to his herculean workload, the king has requested he seek out foreign contracts and advisors to help plan and design the new castle.
