“What would you have me do, Your Majesty?” Cathal responded bemused after reading the letter. He was sat across from the Empress, who had busied herself pouring over plans for the Moderali complex being constructed in Latium. She simply raised an eyebrow, unsure what he meant. “We can’t very well stand in defense of Theodora at a trial held by a rebel government. Not to mention the woman has already damned herself. A slaver deserves their comeuppance.”
Catherine took a moment to finish signing her papers before calmly looking back to respond. “Oh yes. I suspect she’s a dead woman either way. I doubt our interference will change her fate. But this is not about her. It’s about Divinium.” His blank expression indicated that the Councilor had not followed her line of thinking, and so she pressed on. “We need to make a show of our ability to project power. Divinium is the lynchpin of the Latin League. If anyone senses weakness it will fall apart at the seams. So we go and we state her case. We show those bastards that we won’t just roll over!”
“So you want us to organize a defense then? I’m sure our lawyers could-“
She cut him off. “She’s a monarch for Heaven's sake! She doesn’t need a defense!”
“Ah!“ Finally the idea clicked with Cathal, who reached quickly for a pen and paper. “Yes, that could work! I’ll send a wire indicating that we wish to act as the defense council of the Empress Theodora. If she’s half a brain in her head, she’ll keep her mouth shut before a court until we’ve arrived.”

'They are doing what?'
The Hauhkuno listened with perplexed look as his minister repeated the news.
'The peasants are trying to try their monarch for crimes.'
The Hauhkuno almost laughed.
'She... Is being tried for so-called crimes committed under a theocratic-monarchical system of justice in which she could not commit a crime... Whilst under a new separate republican system?'
'Yes, my Hauhkuno.'
The Hauhkuno now did begin to laugh. He laughed so hard and vigorously, that everyone around him looked worried as a man known for his reserved nature suddenly seemed to have been made insane.
'Ah, this is glorious... All right, let us humiliate this woman further... We are going to help defend her against their pathetic excuse for a criminal justice system.'

From: Sa Hauhkuno af þis Raikh af hize Dalin, Haimfaðs þata Mattman Robertsunus af hize Dalin en Goþijin, Thy God and Rightful Lord of the Duomish Pantheon
Future farmers and miners of Duom,
May thou find goodwill and prosperity in economic proportions.
We hereby accept thine invitation to preside over this case and shall also be moving to provide her with the greatest legal counsel and funding available, especially with regards to launching a countersuit against thy state for its illegal imprisonment of its rightful monarch and misappropriation of her property.
Despite a state of war currently existing between our sovereign selves and her, our presence shall be granted, as any move to allow peasants such as thyselves to bring harm to the person of a noble, especially a sovereign, is a perversion of the natural order of things and the peace of the gods, for even the savage tribes of Magdalenum know their place underneath their sovereigns. It is for thy lack of piety that thy lands have been struck with ceaseless war and suffering, for which thy gods shall abandon thee and seek out more faithful peoples.
Thine intellect is as weak as thy dollar, failure is thy destiny. Thou disrespect thy self and thy nation. Thou art made of stupid.
Thine,
Sa Hauhkuno af þis Raikh af hize Dalin, Haimfaðs þata Mattman Robertsunus af hize Dalin en Goþijin, Thy God and Rightful Lord of the Duomish Pantheon
