As the ship steamed away from Duom. Afonsus' health began to quickly deteriorate. A day in, he could no longer walk. Soldiers had to carry him in a chair, so he could look at the sea. He started to cough up blood on the second day of the journey. By the third and fourth day, he could only momentarily leave his bed. The ship's priest stood by his side, preforming the final rites administered to a dying Magdal. A week after, the ship arrived in Angra. A procession carrying the Magdal's remains ran through the city, and then to the train station for the Capital. After the casket ran through the capital, His armor and sabre were sent to the Royal Mausoleum, and the casket sunk on the middle of the Lake of Seven Cities, where the nation's Monarchs had been Historically burried.
A letter was sent to foreign foreign powers, announcing his death. Though he didn't get to bid his daughter farewell, Afonsus did have the forethought to dictate a letter to her to the ship's priest. It reads as follows:
My beloved daughter,
If you are reading this, then it is highly likely that I am with the Gods now. I am sad that you would have to find this out in this manner, and even more saddened by the fact we didn't get to say goodbye. The grief you are feeling right now is perfectly normal. Cherish it, for that is all the love you had for me that you will now never get to express.
You are a young, strong, brave woman, and I couldn't have left the Kingdom on finer hands. You and Hengist will bring this nation into a Golden Age, I'm sure of it. I have taught you well. Know that I, and whoever I meet when I finally give up the ghost, will be looking up for you.
I am so proud of you, my daughter.
Tell little Margarida Father loves her.
Farewell,
Afonsus
