Is a society of mostly elves that is nomitaly a monarchy that has several diets that form the backbone of the government.
Demographics:
750K Total
Government:
There are 6 main factions within the state: The Monarchists, The Merchants, The Nobles, The Clergy, The Warriors, and finally The Farmers. These groups which are listed in general order of importance form the main class structure of the society with the last 5 having their own diets to express their concerns within this system. Generally the 5 diets are each vying for power amongst each other while the monarchists ensure a balance of power and their own authority and the general well being of the state.
Monarchists:
The Monarchists faction although on paper give unflinching support to the king that is not always the case in practice. As their main aim is to ensure the proper function of the state and make sure that the diets are able to function together. As such if all of the current princes are too weak to rule, this faction is known to seek out distant branches of the family tree as a past king gave his courtiers the job of selecting a new king as well as being a check on any neurotic ruler.
Merchants:
This faction despite not being one of the original two diets has risen up to be one of the strongest factions. The reason for this is due to the monarchy trying to distance itself from the entrenched powers. The second is due to the competition for greater profits driving weaker parts of the faction into bankruptcy. As such this faction will continue to grow in power despite the elves being notoriously slow to act. This faction is also given command of the Navy away from the nobles.
Nobles:
An old faction that has fallen on hard times as both the army and navy are no longer under their control. Still this faction maintains the nation's forts and collects the taxes for the king. Also the nobles are generally more well liked than the King as decadence, and cruelty is frowned upon. And the king’s servants are seen as overly stern enforcers of anti-corruption.
Clery:
The other of the old guard, the followers of the flame cult are on even harder times as with the rise of the farmer diet the flow of babies to feed to their god is diminished to criminals, misshapen babies and barbarian tribesmen that raid the nation. As such their touch of the spectacle of the rituals have fallen off and some have even said that sentient sacrifice is barbaric. Still no one would dare directly offend the flame cultists as they are the priests, mages, and scholars of the land who aid in the fertility of the soil, and the populace amongst other things.
Warriors:
This diet is incharge of the Army, and if the merchants ever get lazy the navy in times of war. But mostly this faction deals with random savages and is only interested in the government to make sure that the nation can defend itself and to make sure the nation has enough arms to defend itself with professional soldiers, militias, and a high enough reserve to fund militias.
Farmers:
After several failed harvests this diet was formed to ensure proper policy on the farmlands is enacted. This faction is the second most likely to embrace new ideas so long as they are proven to work. And this faction has expanded to all laborers to make sure that the king can hear their concerns as well as the farmers. This faction is in an extended feud with the flame cult over the idea that the babies of peasants are best suited to be fed to the Fire God, which the monarchy sides with the Farmers on to ensure their loyalty.
Culture:
The current culture of the isthmus would feel like that of a merchant republic based on the current arrangement of the factions within the state, though the people are generally accepting of shifts in governing strategy so long as it is not too abrupt or foreign.
Religion:
The state religion of the isthmus is known as The Flame Cult whose main god is Uireb Lach. There are lesser gods but most people only know of Uireb and do not actively worship other gods. To the commoners the fire god is the source of light, warmth and life of the world that needs to be nourished through faith. To the average faithful they spend their life filling themselves with 'light and life' through various means sanctioned by the Clergy until such a time as they are considered full of life and only decline is possible do they go to a temple in a private ceremony to offer themselves to the eternal flame rather than hatefully cling to a flame that can not maintain through mortal means. Most of the moral tenants of the domestic faith are similar to other religions, though moral exceptions are made to those who are seen as dimming the flame of others and members are known to turn to very vicious if the line of common decency is crossed. The priests are as a rule organized into the Clergy diet.
Diplomacy:
The current state has the reputation of being very kind and welcoming traders, until they are pushed into the opposite. It is as such that rumors of any misdeeds can be downplayed to distant powers. As for the neighbors it is made clear that we are happy to trade unless provoked otherwise.
