On the continent known by the people as Sothoth - Tomorrow - the Dunwikki people make their living. Surrounded by jungles and mountains, this heavily-industrialized place is a land of stark contradiction and confusion, chaos and cold steel, surrounded by vibrant life and underlaid by the brilliant and stark plans of titans of men.
Not very long ago, Dunwik was a corporate enterprise, a state that scarcely existed. The remnants of an old monarchy had been overthrown with force in the year 1822 and a loose coalition of corporations and private landowners had existed in a curious truce to rule essentially as petty lords. Power gradually centralized, and under the reign of the ambitious seaman H.P. Nelson, the first police force and unified law codes came to being. However, Nelson would not be remembered for his "monopoly of force" and the great centralization that he created. Instead, he laid the groundwork for a man even more demented and revolutionary. When he lost to Anthony Platt, they allowed an opening for the maniac Dr. Arthur to seize power in 1913. This inexplicable and unexpected result, the assassination of the Platt Dynasty, and the beginning of a true technocracy hurled the nation down an apocalyptic path. In an orgiastic onslaught of blood and excess, the Dunwikki stormed over their northern neighbors of Leng and exterminated them, fracturing that ancient race into three pathetic shadows of what it once was. Then, Arthur turned his insatiable lust for attention and change to the government of Dunwik itself, and forced - through subordinates like House, through threat of violence, through bribes, and through his charisma over the army and people - the entire state into a new order: his order.
Arthur's order took Dunwikki materialism, the nascent nationalism, atheism, and free-market ideals, early eugenics thought, and supercharged every aspect thereof. He expanded voting massively - but only to those who passed punishingly difficult intellectual tests. He seized the budgets and reorganized the cabinet and the government, but it all was in service to his ideals.
Dunwik is a sapiocratic, semi-democratic technocratic state with a centralized, tiered government. Elections on each level are broken down to Cabinet Candidate and Leader Candidate positions. To be a cabinet candidate, one must hold considerable expertise and experience within a given field, and to vote for a cabinet candidate, the same must apply: one must be at least qualified to practice in a field. Experts provide petitions to the central government vouching for a given candidate, and these men are then certified to reign. The reigning Chairman then selects his cabinet by hand.
However, one of these candidates is appointed to each relevant cabinet position by the leader of the polity. Towns, provinces, and the entirety of Dunwik all have a different leader - a Cadet Chairman for a town, a Chairman for a province, and the Grand Chairman for the whole of Dunwik itself. To vote, one must be in the top decile for a historical test, an intellectual test, and a literacy test, free of any criminal record, and not in any significant debt (IE: able to realistically pay off all debts within 2 years). Should one pass all requirements, then they can vote. Each Chairman is subordinate to the man above him. The courts and judges are appointed by the Chairmen or Grand Chairman, but the Grand Chairman is free to make or dispute laws as he sees fit. In essence, the Grand Chairman is a dictator.
Each cabinet is subdivided into different roles. All cabinets have the following, by subdivision:
INTERIOR: Security, responsible for police forces or oversight of them.
Standards (moved from Science by House). Responsible for establishing standards such as the width of pipes or brightness of lights, and ensuring these are adhered to.
Infrastructure: Responsible for ensuring the -mostly still privatized - roads, railroads, airports, and ports are in good order.
SCIENCE: Research: Responsible for supplying grants to various researchers, funding centralized government scientific initiatives, funding journals, and promulgating recent results.
Education: Responsible for the oversight establishment, funding, and staffing of schools, ranging from elementary education to universities. Closely works with Research departments for ensuring new and effective methods of schooling, and with the Department of Culture to ensure there are artists to keep Dunwik's culture strong and nationalistic.
Culture: Like the Department of Research, but tied to artists instead. AGRICULTURE The Ministry of Agriculture is a single position, responsible for ensuring the food supply is constant, emergency supplies are kept, crops are monitored, and farmland used.
The Chairmen have the same cabinets that Petty Chairmen have, except they have a slightly larger department of Science, with the addition of :
Energy: Responsible for regulating electrical suppliers in the province.
The Grand Chairman oversees a larger cabinet, with the following additional Ministers and roles:
INTERIOR: Communications: Responsible for the oversight of mail and telecommunications services in Dunwik, although most things are privately operated, the Ministry steps in to ensure standards are followed.
SCIENCE: The Grand Chairman's Department of Research hands out the Arthur Award For Outstanding Research annually.
WAR: Army Navy Air Force
FOREIGN AFFAIRS Department Of Diplomacy Department of Extraterritorial Intelligence (Reorganized D.E.A.)
INTERIOR: Economy: responsible for managing the banks, printing currency, and ensuring the stock market is healthy. Technically capable of breaking up monopolies, but almost never does so.
Department of Internal Intelligence (Reorganized D.I.A.)
Any Minister in a higher Chair, (IE, a Minister serving a Chairman to a Petty Chairman, or a Minister serving the Grand Chairman) may countermand a minister of lower rank.
In spite of these rigorous subdivisions, Dunwik is a libertarian and libertine land. Laws on expression are nonextant and people are free to speak as they please, with very few restrictions on the purchase, transport, or sale of goods, lax standards of safety or ethics. While small amounts of mandatory schooling are needed, public schools are still woefully underfunded (with Arthur's private estates currently serving most of that role) and laws minimal. ---
Arthur lost the first election and bowed out with surprising grace, but the shadow he left looms large over Dunwik: there are over 100,000 things in the nation bearing his name: from museums, to scientific journals, train stations, airports, roads, universities, candy bars, and even entire cities, his is a name that shall endure for a long time.
Dunwik is on the bleeding edge of technology: with incredibly lax laws on taxation and human experimentation, as well as entire branches of governmentt dedicated to scientific endeavors, it is trivial for any aspiring individual to amass capital to conduct experimentation on animals or humans.
The flag is a great cog, overlaid with a crossed wrench, nail, and hammer.
Capital and Most Populous City: Miskatonic
Officially Language: Dunwikki
Recognized Languages: Dunwikki
Ethnic Groups: Over 99% Dunwikki
State Religion: Total Atheism: There are no accepted gods - all is materialistic. The closest to gods are celebrities or people of great importance, who are given the label "god" to devalue the idea further. Currently accepted "gods" are Arthur.
Demonym: Dunwikki, Technocrat
Government: Hierarchical Technocratic Sapiocracy with Democratic Characteristics.
Population: 90,000,000 as of 1930

ARCHIVED POST: OLD LEADERS
Howard Philips Nelson is a tall man in his late forties to early fifties. Square jawed and grey haired, he has a formidable handlebar mustache, a great, flat nose, deep-set green eyes and a broad build. He is most commonly dressed in a dark suit, with each silver button machined to resemble a small cog. A ring of platinum rests on his right ring finger, and his shoes are shined to a mirror polish. He is a blunt. quiet man and does not prefer to do things directly, but his interventionist policy means he is always ready to make himself known. He owns Pole Star Shipwrights as well as the South Seas Trade Corporation, and his globalist view has bolstered his own wealth substantially. -Slain by Arthur's goons in March 1918.
Maxwell Haig is a short, thin man with gaunt features and a pointed chin. His brown eyes are cold and stare ahead for quite a distance and his white hair is thin and wiry. He prefers white suits, keeping himself immaculately clean, and it is rumored he bathes three times a day. Prone to ramble and emotionless, his business portfolio encompasses a wide array of different smaller businesses stitched together. Meticulous to a fault. -Killed by the DIA in 1919.
Percival Clarke is the youngest of all the Ministers, and his unlined face is strange amid the gaunt and stern ranks of his compatriots. With a full brown beard and a shining, good natured look to him, he is far more disarming than the others. He prefers red suits, with the same cog buttons as the Grand Chairman. His fortune was made in chocolates and luxury foodstuffs. He's the most empathetic and charming of the ministers, a friendly and calm presence, slow to anger. -Killed by Isaac Arthur in February 1917.
Isaac Arthur is a man in a rumpled suit with black hair streaked with grey. He wears a truly prodigious set of glasses that reflect light, making his eyes difficult if not impossible to see, and his face has severe burns from some distant time. Relatively uncaring of hygiene, he smells like grease and often fiddles with strange trinkets in his pockets. The most flighty of the Ministers, his biggest investments are in electrical corporations, the Edson monopoly being his charge. A tinkerer and a fidgeter, prone to coming up with wild, unorthodox ideas. -Killed in rocket explosion in 1930
Trevor Lucas is a giant of a man with a crooked nose, small, dark eyes, and a square jaw. His shoulders are incredibly broad and he is bulging with muscle. He wears almost nothing but outdated military dress uniform, and the sword on his hip is anything but ceremonial. He is a temperamental and passionate man, quick to speak and quick to anger, and he sits on the chair of many arms corporations. -Perished from rapid-onset dementia in 1917
George Lysin is a short, rotund man who would look better in a pair of overalls than a suit, with a huge, bushy white beard and three chins, he waddles about and seems almost a caricature of the farmer. He doesn't speak much, instead preferring his charts. His fortune is held in agriculture, fitting his station. Quiet and conservative, he grounds whatever meeting he's in. -Died in an accident in 1915.
"Big Tony" is an art magnate, a tremendously fat and jolly man known for his easygoing mannerisms, cultural futurism, and ruthless acquisition of culture. -Gunned down by Arthur in 1912.
Oscar Bayer is colloquially known as the Magnate of Sin. No man holds as much influence over slavers, prostitutes, smugglers, or mafia men as he. A tall and gangly man, pale and grievously scarred from mob fights in his youth, he has his fingers in just about every debauched industry there is, and his mixture of raging egotism and gallows humor belie a ruthless cunning. -Died of a stroke in 1910.
Customs
In Dunwik, it is customary to give gifts when beginning negotiations, and failing to do so is almost seen as a slight. Thus, the average Dunwikki considers most foreigners almost disgustingly rude for failing to provide even a tiny trinket from their lands, while the Dunwikki almost always offer generous gifts of exotic drugs or fruits in their business dealings. An intentionally poor gift is an insult, the most common "bad" gift being either the smallest denomination coin one can find, or a withered tulip bulb.
The Dunwikki rarely lie outright, but will obfuscate and exaggerate to twist fact towards their own benefit.
The Dunwikki as a whole love to gamble, and the Dunwikki rich love to open casinos.
The five largest cities in Dunwik, in descending order, are Miskatonic, Arkhom, Providence, Goldbridge, and Vagus. --- LAW
INHERITANCE: In Dunwik, there is no inheritance tax, but debt is also heritable. If a man is to die while holding outstanding debt, his estate is auctioned and as much of his debt as possible is paid off. If no debt remains, the remaining inheritance is dispensed in accordance with his will where applicable. If there is still debt remaining, it is equally split amongst his children, or delivered in accordance with the will. Some incredibly spiteful men holding grudges against their sons have intentionally accrued a tremendous amount of debt just before their deaths, and assigned all of it to one unlucky heir.
SLAVERY Slavery is legal in Dunwik, and there are three classes of slaves. With sufficient fees, one can purcahase themselves back from their owner.
Class III, or Servants, are men who have sold their exclusive labor to a company. Servants are not particularly discriminated against, and can hold any high office that they can claw their way up to. Indeed, some previous Grand Chairmen were officially Servants to the companies they owned.
CLASS II, or Indentured, are men who have sold their exclusive labor to a person. Indentured have it harder than Servants. While they receive a higher price for their exclusivity than being a Servant, most who stay here are still quite badly in debt. Upon their death, any bond of being a slave is broken.
CLASS I, or Property, are men who have sold their entire autonomy to a person or corporation. Property are chattel slaves who do not receive wages, and instead are given food and shelter for their labor... sometimes. Usually, becoming Property gives sufficient money to waive all debts a man could reasonably accrue, but it also locks one out of most ways of generating capital. Upon death, becoming Property is passed onto the children - there are corporations who own entire bloodlines. Property can in theory hold office, but this is so ludicrously implausible as to be a joke in Dunwik.
Being a servant from birth was outlawed by Arthur.
EUTHANASIA: In Dunwik, it is legal to kill yourself, so long as you do not have any outstanding debt. If this debt is possessed, then it is increased by half upon suicide. Should the deceased have no family, a friend is given this debt instead. Should the deceased be truly alone, the debt is split between many random distant relatives.
FORBIDDEN ITEMS: In Dunwik, to help support a wide variety of industries, very few items are actually prohibited from being possessed by the public, bar explosives in large amounts and certain forbidden literature (anything positively reflective of Communism or Ludditism). Due to high crime from the urban poor, most Dunwikki are armed, and heavily so. At least every third man in Dunwik has a gun.
--- The Resources Of Dunwik: Dunwik, due to being a large area with a wide variety of terrains, is blessed with great natural resources. Most exploited are iron, coal, silver and gold, but other deposits, such as zinc, lead, copper, aluminum, bismuth, manganese, uranium, and phosphates abound. Non-metal resources, such as diamonds and oil are also plentiful, but while the former are mined heavily, the latter is not looked into much, save as a novelty.
Most of Dunwik's farming is not dedicated towards food, but for the plant prerequisites of a variety of drugs, such as quinine, diamorphine, cocaine, and digitalis. As a result, Dunwik has almost no capacity to export food, and the stockpiling of food has recently been put into place by the government, just in case.
As a heavily industrialized nation, Dunwik does have finished goods, such as carriages, automobiles, and railway engines in spades, but only recently emerging from an isolationist phase has meant that their exports of these things are limited.
--- FUN FACTS Chemistry is a very popular field of science in Dunwik, and chemists are highly sought after due to the booming narcotics industry. Science fiction is loved by the upper class of Dunwik. The lower class are fond of gambling. The Dunwikki national animal is the Dunwikki parrot, a brilliantly colored and fiercely intelligent bird. Well-trained specimens are considered some of the most valuable gifts possible to offer. The Gini coefficient of Dunwik is 0.6695.

OLD LEADERS OF DUNWIK
As of 7/24/2022 IRL time, 1/10/1910 game time, Anthony "Big Tony" Platt has succeeded Howard Philips Nelson as Grand Chairman of all Dunwik. He has installed a new cabinet, a new census will be taken, and the fleet's modernization efforts will be considered
MINISTER OF SCIENCE - ISAAC ARTHUR The long-serving mad scientist and left hand to Nelson is the only member of the cabinet to maintain his position after Tony's entrance. Taking a keen interest in genetics, a staunch theophobe and industrialist, his policies will remain unchanged. Having been in service since 1890, he is no longer a young man, but he still bears the fanatic energy and ego of youth. His pride and joy remains his parrot breeding program. He has since gone totally bald. -Killed in rocketry explosion, 1930
MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR - MAXWELL HOUSE A short man with slick black hair, fond of black suits (unlike the usual Dunwikki white) and renowned as an especially shrewd cheater at poker, House is confident and calm, conniving and ruthless.
MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS - SIMON PLATT The son and heir to Anthony Platt, Simon is a man in his father's image - obesity and all. Sharing the same jolly attitude, technological ambitions, and worldly desires, the biggest difference is that Simon has his mother's shining black hair, which he keeps long and braided, often experimenting with, attempting to keep in new, novel styles every day. Has an excellent relationship with his father and a keen interest in foreign cultures. Unlike his father, he is very sensitive about his weight. -Gunned down by Arthur, 1913.
MINISTER OF WAR - CONAN REDD The exact opposite of the fiery Lucas who preceded him, Redd is a man who views war not in an honorable sense, but as industry and nothing more. Business to be done swiftly and then left behind. A man who cares more for the logistical side of things, sober and dispassionate, often comparing men to objects or tools to be moved around a board. -Killed in Kaizo's onslaught 1930.
MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE - JOHNATHAN HARVEY PRICE With the decline of Dunwikki agriculture after the opening of Dunwik, the position of Minister of Agriculture suffered a tremendous loss in prestige. Price is more scientist than farmer or administrator, a good friend to Arthur, and a man interested in the medical impact that certain diets may hold. A popularizer of food science, peanut agriculture, and crop rotations, he's far more outspoken than the quiet and aged Lysin.
--- As of 1/7/1913 game time, or 10/19/2022 IRL time, the current Grand Chairman is Isaac Arthur
Grand Chairman - Isaac Arthur
Stress has unleashed a dark energy in the former Minister of Science. It's an open secret that he murdered Anthony Platt and his designs on the Lengan people are clear. His cold and stern demeanor in business is broken up by a dependency on coffee and frequent raids for stronger stimulants. He's gone completely bald and is entering middle age looking far more weathered and battered than he should be. He speaks with a thick Arkhom accent.
Furthermore, Dr. Arthur's brilliance focused more on science and logistics - geopolitics and negotiations are difficult for his impatient and unstable personality. While he can boast of having 1,000 patents, Arthur has at most three true friends. Stress causes him to lash out frequently and require restraint or distraction.
Arthur is a diehard atheist and a borderline theophobe - a man disgusted by organized religion. He views it as childish.
Dr. Arthur is most often found wearing a lab coat and thick, smoked glasses, black gloves and black boots. For particularly formal occasions he also wears a black cape on a silver chain and carries a novelty scepter topped with a plasma ball, the sparking electrical energy giving him some solace. He's rarely seen without a parrot resting on a leather perch on his left shoulder.
Somewhere deep inside him, there is a heart. He dotes on his nephew and his grand-nephew and does care deeply for the animals under his care. -Died in rocketry explosion, 1930.
MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR - Maxwell House The House Always Wins
Minister of War - Trevor Lucas The geriatric firebrand Lucas has returned to his previous role of Minister of War. A seasoned general and keen observer of international events, the only problem is his pronounced and advanced age, as well as his ailing health. A succession plan has already been drafted for him -Died of dementia, 1917
Minister Of Foreign Affairs - Jeremy Jones A newcomer to politics, a firebrand speaker, and a conniving opportunist, Jones had made a fortune running lotteries and giving public speaking seminars on interpersonal relationships. Middle-aged and vain about his age, he seems to be more a stopgap to fill the role than anything else. -Killed by Wesker Wesker's security in 1916
Minister of Science - Robert Wesker Wesker Wisk-Wisk, as Isaac affectionately calls his nephew, is not the brilliant sort of scientist Isaac is. Nor is he a scientist at all, but rather a keen organizer and judge of talent. A reclusive and exacting man, Wesker Wesker is a tight-fisted but idealistic person, just about 22 years old. He's a flighty and nervous man, but he is happily married.
Rumor has it he's just as smart as his uncle, but he denies this.
-Killed by Jeremy Jones and Percival Clarke in 1916.
MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE Harold Wells Of no relation to famous Dunwikki author I.M Wells, Wells is a complete neat freak, control freak, and it is said if you were to spill a bag of rice in front of him, he would count every grain. He's entering old age with some grace, his lined face often set in a stern expression
With the deaths of Jeremy Jones and Robert Wesker-Wesker, new men have been appointed.
This is valid beyond February 1917, with the deaths of Jones and Wesker.
Minister of Foreign Affairs - Roland Bosch
Celebrity lawyer Roland Bosch had made his name representing high-profile case after high-profile case, but his appointment to the Ministry was unexpected. After a series of strange legal maneuvers, Bosch returned to Dunwik to represent the country. Bosch is a portly, middle-aged man with greying hair, a thick, heavy jaw, and deep-set eyes behind a sloping, sagging brow. A legalistic man with a secret love of the Dunwikki "detective pulp" novels, his task is an unenviable one. He distinguished himself with legal maneuvers in the Sadaler Raikh.
-Killed in Kaizo's onslaught, 1931
Minister of Science - Alfred Wake Wake is not a scientist, continuing with the unusual trend away from general technocracy and more towards appointment of managers. Wake is a wide-eyed idealist, truly taken in with the concept of Dunwikki Futurism, and has eagerly thrown himself into the work of organizing standards and encouraging further inventions. However, the toll of this job is rapidly wearing him down.
Beyond 1918 With the infirmity of Trevor Lucas, a new Minister of War has taken power.
Leonard "Satan" Walsh is a conservative, cautious man who speaks slowly, and despite his short height and slim build radiates an aura of menace due to his expressive and grotesque tattoos, which cover every square inch of his skin. Wearing the "bleeding skull" and with two "full sleeves" of barbed wire, Walsh is most known for being the most effective and ruthless Dunwikki general in the Leng War, overseeing the complete collapse of the Lengan western front and the sack of Edasu-Urvalbaara. He is easily annoyed, always has something pineapple flavored on hand (giving him the other nickname "The Pineapple King") and a staunch advocate for logistical, attritional, and grinding warfare, having learned the hard way in Leng that bold maneuvers can easily fail.

The flora, fauna, and symbols of Dunwik
The Greater Dunwikki Red Parrot is a large bird renowned for their intelligence, if not their grace in flight. Capable of manipulating objects finely with their beaks and talons, they take some time to take off in flight. However, that is not what they are famous for. The parrot has become a Dunwikki icon for their capacity to speak, not just mimicking other birds, but also people, gunfire, and logging instruments.
The parrots have swarmed the cities and are effective enough to scavenge there, flying easily from building to building and making their roosts in telephone poles just as easily as they do the rainforest. They are seen as the natural exemplar of the Dunwikki spirit for their most common ploy: they panhandle!
The birds have learned to mimic human speech and often fly about, repeating sales pitches. It has been Dunwikki custom to feed birds with particularly amusing pitches, and over the decades they have become fearsomely adept at panhandling.
These birds are the national bird of Dunwik and the pride and joy of Dr. Isaac Arthur, who has been intently studying and breeding them since 1890, hoping to generate a bird of human intelligence to prove that human intelligence can arise without divine intervention. --- Clothing in Dunwik had shifted dramatically at the tail end of the Monarchy, with a shift away from indigenous Dunwikki clothing to Germanic-style outfits from imported cotton to try and fit in with the outside world. However, after 1918, rising Dunwikki nationalism lead to the discarding of such articles and a return to the old methods of dress. Dunwikki clothing is made of fibers from the trees of coconut, banana, or pineapple trees, and dyed either naturally or synthetically, but always bright. Vibrant reds, blues, purples, pinks, and yellows adorn the Dunwikki, oftentimes their clothes smelling sweet, flowing loosely around their bodies. Small pads often exaggerate the size of the shoulders or chest, but otherwise the body beneath is hard to see.
So too did names see a stark loss of German identity, especially with the Ostrean wars sparking off in the early 1920s. Under the rumors of Ostreans being degenerate and stupid subhumans contaminated with leaden soil and rampant dysgenics, the desire for a more "Dunwikki" identity emerged. Many Dunwikki renamed themselves, with only a few exceptions like Dr. Arthur (too in love with his own name to change it) and Maxwell House (for fear of offending Ostrean trade partners.) Dunwikki names still follow the pattern of: Degree, given name (personal identification), honorific/nickname, family name, governmental position (if extant). An example:
Bch. Zyel "Fingers" Yalmin, Min. Petty Cabinet of Security.
Dunwikki degrees or honorifics, ascending order of importance: Bch. Master. Dr. Pf.
Generally, one is only referred to by the highest honorific, which supersedes all lower ones.
Sample Dunwikki given names: Ayk Borro Cillan Dern Hayak Obar Satan (popularized during the Leng War). Zyel
Sample Dunwikki honorifics/nicknames: Satan/Accuser (an enemy of religions, cults, or general nonsense. Often taken or given to fiercely militaristic or nationalist Dunwikki.) [WIP]
Sample Dunwikki last names: Gilman [WIP]

Small quirks on Dunwikki culture, sports, slang.
Dunwik's sport culture is a strange, hypercompetitive and hypermonetized environment. There are no restrictions against performance-enhancing drugs, and bribery between teams is common. As a result, individual sports, where single persons bet themselves against each other, are most popular, under the belief that it's harder to make a single man consent to being humiliated in front of a crowd. A team could blame each other, a lone person must blame himself.
Popular sports include a form of fencing, a mixed-martial arts heavy in wrestling, horseback racing, and what has been coined the "Dunwikki Biathlon", a brutal obstacle course that gained popularity after the Okay War. In the Dunwikki Biathlon, contestants must run an obstacle course while carrying a rifle, then shoot targets after the fact.
Some Dunwikki slang: "A gator's walk" - a short distance, within a small margin of error. "Mick" a disreputable man, a large knife, a man affiliated with a gang. "Hand" as in (to be someone's hand). A servant, subordinate, or ally. Usually meant to mean a lower member of a gang "Pineapples": Suspicious, secretive, rigged. "Puye" - untranslatable Dunwikki expletive, meaning something along the lines of old man, moron, and child simultaneously. Formally, "of possessing the worst qualities of infancy and geriatric age." Possibly the oldest word in the Dunwikki language. Originally referred to monarchists. "Loony/Loonie" - derogatory term, Lengan, insane person, corrupt person.
"White tie" - An endeavor (particularly film) in which nobody is killed, or an informal event. "Red tie" - An endeavor (particularly film) in which someone is wounded. "Black tie" - An endeavor (particularly film) in which someone is slain, or a formal event.
An extremely brief overview of Dunwikki ethnic history. A long time ago, a pseudo-Germanic tribe called the Dunbarri landed in the land that would be Dunwik, mingling with the non-Lengan natives there. The Dunbarri were almost wholly subsumed, with only vaguely Germanic names remaining of them, and the Dunwikki race being the result of this fusion.
In Dunwik, tattoos are things of pride that normally mark achievements, oaths, contracts, or accomplishments. There is a general language of tattoos that can be understood, and they are often placed on important, visible parts of the body.
The "bleeding skull" covers the entire face in a mark of total loyalty, depicting a gruesome human skull covered in blood. Only taken by total hard-line members of some group, it denotes that the person so marked is willing to kill anyone for their cause. It is generally not applied unless someone has the barbed wire tattoo. Anyone with a bleeding skull and no barbed wire tattoo is usually seen as a fraud.
The barbed wire tattoo is a common one among the soldiery. A line of barbed wire around the arm means that they have killed someone. More lines means more fatalities. Dunwikki men with these tattoos often have "sleeves" of barbed wire that they demonstrate.
The "broken cross" gained popularity on the eastern front of the war in Leng. It is a picture of a cross or some other symbol burning or being destroyed in some way. Wearing it means one has great disdain for the Christian faith - or religion in general.
The "red parrot" tattoo is one rumored to be borne and popularized by Isaac Arthur (alongside, if rumor is also to be believed, his alleged full sleeve of barbed wire). This rumor is probably just attributed to him, since the red parrot has been a symbol of intelligence for a long time. Generally, someone with these considers themselves smart. It depicts the Greater Dunwikki Red Parrot, the smartest bird in the world.
Various crime families had their own tattoos, symbols unique to them, but after Nelson's Monopoly of Force and Arthur's purge of the underground, these have essentially become bygone relics of a former time. Many soldiers continued the tradition though, and in the wake of every major war, tattoo themselves to mark what unit they served with.
A silver cog and nail is generally regarded as a sign of good fortune. A mark of a hand is often taken to mean that someone owns another human being.

Private Forces: As above, plus Fearless Just before the civil war: All aircraft carriers had been retrofitted. The total number was 15. The Nelson's Folly remained intact. 20 heavy cruisers 35 light cruisers 70 destroyers 120 submarines - mostly new. The Dunwikki Air Force had remained about the same size but were almost entirely new aircraft. Large stocks of spare parts existed. Private forces remained mostly the same, although a few tanks were lost due to poor maintenance and many planes were upgraded. The Dunwikki army had another 200 tanks, for a total of 400. Defensive emplacements, particularly anti-shipping and anti-aircraft, had become formidable.

Note: Everything above this point will be dramatically overhauled once the war concludes. By the Dunwikki Civil War's beginning in January 1930, the Dunwikki population stood at around 90,000,000.
The DNK Nelson's Folly sank under massive air attack off the Vagus coast.
