A young Divinian Scout sat primly in uniform in the corner of a St. Helena thermopolium, picking at a plate of dolma. His legs swung lazily back and forth, brushing up against the satchel at his feet. Men walked past on their way back to work from their sexta, typically paying no mind to the boy. As the hour crept to a close, the child began to fidget. What if he never showed up?
Finally a large, barrel chested man with a thick auburn beard walked past, too close, and tripped over the scout’s legs. With a clatter his briefcase fell to one side, and his cigar skittered across the floor. In an instant the boy jumped, but was tugged swiftly off his stool by his victim. “Damn whelp! Mind your manners! Help me collect my things!” Instead of reaching for the briefcase, the tall man grabbed the satchel. He opened it, eyed the contents, and threw one more look to the child. “Get lost!”, he shouted, causing the scout to scramble for the door.
On the docks, Florin and Archduke Estrana were standing with the Divinian Merchant Marines. Traditionally, the monarch handed garlands to the men in remembrance of their service throughout Divinian History. Happily the boy stood on tiptoes, reaching up to give the representatives their wreaths. It was never an occasion full of particular pomp, but tradition was tradition. As the young emperor stooped to pick up another garland of flowers, a sharp crack broke through the calm sound of the waves lapping against the harbor walls. A bullet smacked the stone to Archduke Estrana’s left, sending the Praetorian contingent into immediate action. They raised their thick shields in unison, rushing forward to form a wall against the incoming gunfire.
Too late, another crack, and the Archduke cried out, clutching his upper arm in agony. Somewhere, someone had fired on the Emperor's uncle, and the praetorian guard was not equipped to do more than form a wall around the injured man. Had they not been distracted, they would have noticed the odd movement of a large, barrel chested merchant marine with an auburn beard as he stepped forward from among his men.
The men pounced on him too late. Far too late to stop the swing of his pugio toward the boy. Petals fell from the garland clutched in Florin’s hands as he stared down at the crimson line spreading across his chest. “Oh! I think…” was all that he squeaked out before also collapsing to the stone.
Had anyone but the Archduke’s men conducted the following investigation, they might have noted the odd interaction between the man and the Divinian scout earlier that day. They may also have noted the surprising dullness of the dagger used to injure the emperor. Or how odd it was for the praetorian guards to rush to the Archduke instead of their emperor. But none of that evidence would ever see the light of day. What was made abundantly clear upon initial reports, was that this man who boldly attacked the emperor in broad daylight, was an Ostrean. But to which western nation did his allegiances lie?

We have heard of the tragic event and wish to express our sympathies and well-wishes. We are horrified that such an attack would take place, especially at such a sensitive time as this. We hope that your government is swift in bringing punishment down upon the perpatrators and make the villains suffer.
We hope this does not impact our other business arrangements with your government.
Yours,
Sa Andbahts af hizos Oburste Flutts en Harjisisleidung

Father, I heard news of the attack. Are you hurt? Are you getting the wound properly tended to? A bullet wound left untreated can cause serious injury; I know you have your pride but its not worth your life. And Florin! How is he? Is the cut severe? Is he conscious? I can only imagine how the poor boy must be feeling, especially with how close this is to his mother's death.
I would like to visit you. It has been a good few years since we last spoke and the idea that you could die before we met again is troubling. If you would have me I would like to visit with Ludwig and little Wilhelm so that he can meet his grandfather. And know that if I find out you were brushing off your recovery there will be hell to pay.
You are in my prayers, Dynmpha Cransnikov

Your Majesty Emperor Florin,
We in the Association have heard news of the unfortunate events earlier today in which you and your uncle sustained significant injuries from a would be Assassin. And on behalf of our people, I hope both of you have a speedy recovery. You have my government and I's best wishes to do so. Also, I'd like to leave you a some words of wisdom my old friend First Councillor John Smith told me after his first assassination attempt, "Always remember that evil will always try to snuff out those who are righteous", I believe that to apply here.
Please find attached to this letter a bar of chocolate.
Regards,
First Councillor von Marshall.

This is not the worst wound I have sustained in my life, and despite my age you will find me much recovered in due time. To my surprise, Florin has taken this matter with a tenacity and vigor of character I did not know he possessed. In time I pray he will hone that energy into his rulership. As your father, I would strongly dissuade you from leaving your home simply to be by my side. I worry it may be viewed negatively by your people. However, as a member of foreign royalty, I am no longer in a position to command you as I once was. Thus I will implore you to take care should you decide to take this voyage. Whatever you choose, know that you will always have a place to rest here, and that I will endeavor, as I always have, to ensure the best outcome for our family. Love, Your Father

To: Geoff von Marshall, First Councillor of the Association From: His Ephemeral Majesty, Florin Aurelius von Marcum, Emperor Elect of Divinium Dear Sir, Thank you very much for the chocolates. I always liked Sheenish pastries, so I cannot wait to try your other confections. Thank you as well, for your prayers on my behalf. God wills it that neither my uncle nor I were mortally wounded, though I am afraid your mention of righteousness is lost on me. As with all people, I too fall short of the glory of God. Though I am very happy to hear you find me worthy of that praise. I will strive to be worthy of it, and offer hopes that no more western violence will plague our shared continent again. Your friend, Emperor Florin.

Post by Empress Isabel de Roque on Oct 7, 2022 10:26:40 GMT
From: Her Most Faithful Majesty, Isabel Afonses de Roque, Empress of Magdalenum and Tsarina of Rodina & Her Majesty, Carolina Hengistdottir de Roque, Princess of Magdalenum and Rodina To: His Ephemeral Majesty, Florin Aurelius von Marcum, Emperor Elect of Divinium
Your Majesty,
I heard of the news of the attempt on your life. I hope I can offer you some comfort while you recover, though I know that you'll be pushing through like the brave young man you are. Along with this letter should be a package, containing within some of my personal favourite items to pass the time. Spiced Cheese from the pastures of the Northern Province, and a collection of novels from Magdali Authors, all translated to Latin, of course. Please tell the Duke Estrana that Empress Isabel sends him wishes of a full recovery.
Best regards, Isabel Afonses de Roque.
Hello Florin,
Mother let me write on this letter too! I heard you got stabbed. General de Sousa says he was stabbed too once, and that it hurt a lot. I hope you're not in a lot of pain! But maybe you'll get a scar! I only have one scar, from the time I was out sailing in the lake and the mast hit my back. It's very small but you can still see it when I wear Divinan clothing. Anyway, I sent along with Mother's stuff a journal full of some the poems I've written in Latin. I hope you like them!
Your Friend, Princess Carolina.
P.S.: General de Sousa here. We didn't talk much when he came for the Empress' wedding, but I took a liking to the Duke Estrana. I've sent a bottle of Magdali Port from my collection of Vintages along with this parcel. Please make sure it reaches the Duke. I wish both of you a full and speedy recovery.

Zephyros Phrixos was not usually a clever man. He was not a pleasant man either. But when the cards fell directly into his lap, he could not turn them away. His family had grown wealthy under the guidance of the High Queen Catherine, and that wealth allowed him access to the Prospectors Cartel. Now he had the ear of the emperor.
He rubbed the burn in his temple from where his man had burned him with the iron, hoping the fashionable curls would stay in place as he entered the Argent Palace. Divinian fashion was odd, but he knew well enough that looking the part was expected by these Latin overlords. So he had dressed every bit the Divinian when he met the emperor in the atrium. In contrast, His Majesty seemed relaxed. He sat on the edge of a pool, gently pawing at the circling fish with his tunic tucked beneath him. Phrixos beamed, and genuflected, touching his forehead to the earth in front of the boy. Florin looked perplexed, waving away the act. How merciful of him!
“Sir, please there’s no need for that. We don’t bow here.”
Phrixos rose, though he averted his eyes away from the boy. “They should, your Eternal Majesty! For you are the God-King! The divine child, given flesh to lead our people. It may not be the way in the Latin Provinces, but in the Gankands we recognize your deific rights. The son of the Goddess Catherine, of the blood of Aries and Aphrodite.”
“Ah. We do not believe that story is quite so literal here”. Florin rose, approaching the man with a pat on the arm.
“Forgive me, but perhaps your people do not want it to be so, because they tremble to think of what power you could have if you chose to take it.”
“I. Uh-well. What can I do for you?” Florin blushed, the attention was uncomfortable, though not unwelcome.
“I have much to tell you, your Majesty, of happenings in your southern provinces. The man who dared to lay hands on you found his way into my custody. I don’t believe you’ve heard his confession. It may be illuminating to you.”
“And in exchange? What do you want?”
“Me? Your Eternal Majesty, I desire nothing more than to be in your service however you see fit. But those who would act against you, I fear they have been allowed too close. Shall we find somewhere private? This may be shocking.”
