From: João Pedro Cabral, Pico's foot Northeastern Survey Station To: Professor Miguel Ferreira Borges, University of Magalhães;
Professor,
We have recently captured most concerning readings. The ground has been shacking with an increased level of frequency, and the quakes seem to me moving Northeast, away from the crater. Intensity continues to rise, and we fear they might reach the city of Lajido in a few weeks. While levels continue to not be of concern, we suggest the authorities be made aware of this and that the proper precautions are put in place.
Best regards,
João Pedro Cabral
On that same day, on the local radio Station:
"Fishing boats have reported several pockets of boiling seawater along the coast around the city. Swimming for leisure or any non-essential maritime activity is currently not advised by local authorities, and the local army regiment has been detached on land to observe the situation. The Royal Navy has also dispatched two survey vessels to analyze the boiling water up close. Tune in later today for more details."

January 10 th, 1910 From: João Pedro Cabral, Pico's foot Northeastern Survey Station To: Professor Miguel Ferreira Borges, University of Magalhães;
Professor,
I regret to inform you that I do not write good news. The quakes have gotten worse. The navy reports that the hot zones of boiling water have grown larger, and we fear a large scale eruption is coming soon. I will try to send daily reports. God have mercy on us all.
Best regards,
João Pedro Cabral

January 11 th, 1910 From: João Pedro Cabral, Pico's foot Northeastern Survey Station To: Professor Miguel Ferreira Borges, University of Magalhães;
Professor,
The ground has shook 450 times since I last wrote to you. The Navy sends word that the hot spots have begun to color gray with ash, and that whatever is boiling underneath the sea may soon grow above the water. Local Government has issued an order of evacuation, and it seems as is going as we feared. Nature's wrath knows no bounds, let us hope she doesn't lash out at us.
Best regards,
João Pedro Cabral January 12 th, 1910 on the local radio Station: "Dear Listeners. We speak to you for what is hopefully not one final time. We, like everyone in the city, and vacating the danger zone until the situation regarding the volcanic activity on our shores has subsided. Until further notice, the Military will be making use of this station while it is safe to do so. Please tune in to this frequency for briefings on the situation as it happens. Final reminder that the Volcano has surfaced, and has begun spewing ash and gaseous smoke into the air. It is no longer safe to remain near the city. If you do not have means to accommodate yourself, request transportation and housing at the Military outpost at the border of the exclusion zone. God have mercy on us all. This is Pedro Álvares Pereira, signing off. Goodbye."
