A modest DOC fleet sailed into Port Hamagawa. Word of them had reached the ID through Tholish and Sadaler channels. Though not the first on the scene, Divinium had been spared all the nuance of first contact. And though they would certainly procure these western goods through negotiations with the Hansa, it never hurt to have multiple sources of income.
Captain Manius was thrilled to see his sources had been correct. Latin signs! Easy to follow thank the Gods! He strode toward the administration office content to be searched for weapons he did not have. What he did have however, were documents. Documents directly from Councilor Durot on the matter of procuring any valuable materials from these people. Whoever said war was bad for business clearly never engaged in the kind of business they had planned!

The administrator stops whatever he was doing and waits for the men to speak.

I’ve been sent to secure a line of trade between the Imperium Divinium and your nation. Her Serene Majesty and his Ephemeral Majesty are mainly interested in the procurement of mineral and chemical goods. Iron, nickle, coal, the like. I have an itemized list of our desired resources, as well as major trade goods”. He handed the list across the table. “Presumably it would be in our mutual interest to exchange consulates as well, though that can be worked out at a later date. Ah, and I have this note from our Councilor of Arms. Something about military testing? I’m unsure who it should be handed off to.”

Later… he comes back from the bottom floor and tells the men that he will mail the note to the Military council and tells them to “Go and Do whatever while you wait. The hotels will be arranged soon and in the meantime go visit the local area.” He then dismissed them and left them outside the Gate with a note with information about the hotel and while time to head there, As well as a map for the city.

“Oh yes, this will do nicely, thank you!” Ambassador Pariamua called out when the men were shown their rooms.
“No this will not do nicely Ewan! The place looks half furnished.” Captain Manius hissed in response, pulling at the ambassador's sleeve.
“Well, when in Latium…”
“But we aren’t in Latium. We’re the furthest from Latium I’ve ever been. Do they really expect-“
“They expect us to not know how to act. I’d prefer it if you don’t confirm their suspicions.”
The two argued quietly the entire way out the door and well into the streets. If the accommodations hadn’t set him off, Captain Manius nearly blew a gasket when he was handed a rifle before they set out. Ewan had to stomp on the Captain's foot with the hobnails of his sandals to avoid an altercation. Out in the streets, the conversation shifted. It was stilted yet full of subtext.
“Ah, another tea stall. Isn’t that charming?”
“Oh look there. Fish and rice. A common sight back home as well.”
They were thankful at least, for the somewhat familiar sight of a public bathhouse. Even there though, Manius grumbled as he sank into the water. Ewan tilted his head, smiling.
“Hieren?” The simple phrase was enough for the Captain to switch to Aerali’i, which was assuredly safe enough to converse in.
“Do they intend to make soup of us? Why waste incense in a public bath?”
“Surely you can’t dislike everything. Is this not indicative of some similarity between our people?”
“Similarity? It’s a facsimile. Even the Sadaler’s have public baths. What am I to be impressed with next? The fact that they managed to build a road? They didn’t even provide an escort! Talk about hospitality!”
“We don’t make deals with friends. You know that full well. You don’t have to like them. Simply show them the same respect expected of all foreign representatives. Your behavior reflects on all of us.”
“Yes well the sooner my feet touch Placidian soil the better. Strange western cultures don’t impress me much.”
