Early History
They can trace their heritage back to the Danish Invaders of the Sadalen in 856 AD. When the Danish were finally driven out in 885 some of the soldiers from their army fled across the Braiðs river where they settled and expanded from there. Over time they came to encompass the lands that become known as Rashad: (meaning Land of 12). The original Danish settlers eventually fell to infighting due to the lack of resources so 12 groups formed each travelling off in their own directions.
These 12 groups soon formed their own “kingdoms” with each of the kingdoms locked in almost ceaseless war for well over 200 years. It wasn’t until the king of house Vylder defeated the other kings in the battle of the Crimson plain where he crushed the other kings and established the Empire of Rashad.
Government
Rashad is Ruled by the Emperor who is selected from one of the 12 Dukes for life and upon their death the Dukes must select a new Emperor from amongst their ranks. The new Emperor must not be from the Same house as the previous house unless that Emperor ruled for less then 1 year. If a duke puts their name forward to be elected Emperor then they will not get a vote on who actually becomes Emperor. The Emperor will then allocate a position to a duke to hold for the reign of the Emperor. Once selected the Emperor must serve for life or the remaining 11 dukes unanimously vote them out at which point they commit ritual suicide to maintain the purity of the Thone, If they do not commit suicide then they will be executed by the other dukes and their Nobel house is declared to be traitors and will be hunted down until extinction.
Dukes
To be a Duke one must be the eldest living male in the house and must be a direct descendent from the first duke of that house meaning you can’t marry into the position of duke. If there is no living Eligible Male heir then the family is considered extinct and the house is hunted and destroyed. Females are excluded from the role of duke and are expected to be absolutely loyal to their duke and if found to be breaking any of the rules they will be ritually murdered to help the Family retain their honour. Dukes hold absolute power within their Dukedoms being the final judge on any decision. The only exception is a direct law from the Emperor which only lasts until the end of that Emperor’s reign.
Houses
If a house is destroyed then a new house is selected from within the lands of the old Dukedom and one of the smaller Noble families, by the Emperor. (As of 1903 this has happened 3 times). Within a dukedom there is always 12 minor noble families that respect the Dukes as Feudal Lords who in turn respect the Emperor as theirs. A minor noble family is selected from a group of Knights that number 144 in each dukedom. These knights must be married and have had at least 1 male heir.
The 12 current houses are
Allric, Aychwych, Carvallio, Eambald, Hunzuad, Legrass, Malabre, Oswulf, Pandarvas, Rothwell, Urqhart, Vylder
