Ælthelnoð the most esteemed northern duke of Norðtholum (of the house of the same name) stood facing the entire of New Respite's officers and could feel nothing but disappointment. How excited he was when Wilhelm that old glory hound finally acquiesced to his requests for an overseas appointment for him and his sons, and how bitter the realization that he was relegated to commanding little more than a ceremonial garrison.
Despite this Ælthelnoð was not a man quick to despair nor failure if he was not given a task worthy of his talents he'd find one, it is for that reason that he was now looking over the frankly pathetic group of so called officers New Respite could muster. The Caudians for their part were quite nervous in regards to the strange hawkish man looking over them and obviously finding them unsatisfying.
The tense silence was broken by Ælthelnoð, "Listen closely for I am not a man who often repeats himself. As the Tholish kingdom has been placed as New Respite's protectors, I as commander of the Tholish forces in this nation believe it would be prudent to create a force of officers capable of protecting New Respite in case of complications." At this Ælthelnoð paused for a brief moment scanning the crowd with a gaunt and pitiless gaze, "It is quite obvious that you all as a whole are woefully inept as it stands now and for you to become proper officers you must suffer greatly-" discontent murmurs arose at this but were quickly silenced by Ælthelnoð continuing with greater zeal and volume, "Nothing less than perfection is acceptable for an officer! The second you take command you must shoulder the weight of the lives of all those beneath you, their failings are truly your failings, their misconduct is the result of your failure to discipline them, their cowardice is from your failure to lionize them, and their deaths rest squarely on you."
Ælthelnoð began to pace as he made sure he had the rapt attention of the assembled "officers", "The entire military apparatus relies on the officers not the men, the bravest of heroes are hobbled if led by incompetent men and the worst cretins can be led to glorious triumph if commanded by proper officers. As a result of all this I will accept nothing but excellence. The path to reach said excellence will be long and terribly painful but completely possible for anyone with the grit to see the it to completion. I am sure there are many among you who do not have what it takes and to said people I must simply say: go. If you are unwilling to suffer you are not suited to lead; get out of my sight and never call yourself an officer again.
