The Establishment of the Subsurface Service
To all submarine commanders,
As you know, we are engaged in a new kind of warfare that requires courage, skill, and endurance. Submarines are a powerful weapon against our enemies, but they also pose many challenges for our crews. Therefore, I have issued the following regulations and policies to ensure that our submariners remain healthy, motivated, and efficient.
Hygiene. Submarines are confined spaces with limited ventilation and fresh water. Poor hygiene can lead to diseases and infections that can impair our combat readiness. Therefore:
- All crew members must wash their hands before meals and after using the toilet.
- All crew members must brush their teeth twice a day with salt water and baking soda.
- All crew members must shave at least once a week with a safety razor and soap.
- All crew members must change their underwear and socks every three days.
- All crew members must air out their bedding every day on deck when possible.
- All crew members must report any signs of illness or injury to the medical officer immediately.
- All crew members must remain chaste aboard ship and learn to masturbate.
Ship maintenance. Submarines are complex machines that require constant care and attention. Any malfunction or damage can compromise our safety and performance. Therefore:
- All crew members must follow the daily routine of cleaning, inspecting, lubricating, and repairing their assigned equipment and compartments.
- All crew members must report any defects or problems to their superior officer promptly.
- All crew members must participate in regular drills and exercises to test and improve their skills and knowledge of submarine operations.
- All crew members must obey all orders from the captain and other officers without question or hesitation.
Leisure. Submarines are stressful environments that can affect our mental health and morale. Leisure activities can help us relax, cope, and bond as a team. Therefore:
- All crew members are allowed to bring personal items such as books, games, musical instruments, and so forth, as long as they do not take up too much space or interfere with their duties.
- All crew members are encouraged to socialise with each other during off-duty hours by playing cards, chess, draughts, and so forth, or by telling stories or jokes.
- All crew members are permitted to smoke tobacco on board (except near fuel tanks and ammunition or when submerged), but they must use ashtrays and dispose of cigarette butts properly.
- All crew members are entitled to one tot of rum per day (except when on watch), which will be distributed by the captain at his discretion.
Discipline. Submarines are dangerous places that require discipline, orderliness, and respect for authority. Any breach of discipline can jeopardise our mission and lives. Therefore:
- All crew members must wear their uniforms properly at all times (except when sleeping), and salute when addressing an officer.
- All crew members must refrain from using profane, insulting, or disrespectful language towards anyone on board.
- All crew members must avoid any form of gambling, fighting, or stealing on board.
- All crew members must avoid forming non-platonic relationships with anyone on board.
- All crew members who violate any of these rules will be subject to punishment by the captain, which may include confinement, extra duty, reduction in rank, or dismissal from service.
These regulations and policies are designed to make our submarines more effective and comfortable for our crews. I expect you to follow them strictly and faithfully. Remember, we are fighting for our country, our freedom, and our honour.
Signed,
Captain of the Fleet, Sigurd Wurdhaldja
