The Old and True Way of Declaring War: As Recorded by the Hebithdräkhskapiz af Lisnojaning Put on the woollen headband, go to the frontier of the foe, shout out your demands and invoke a chief god's name, proceed over the frontier, shout out the demands again and invoke an unknown god, meet the first man across the frontier, shout out your demands and invoke the name of a love god, go to their gate, shout out your demands and invoke a god of builders, go to their court and before their great men, shout out your demands and invoke a god of war. If they do not meet your demands, declare war in thirty-three days, then go home, ask for confirmation of the war, and then return once more to the frontier and throw a blood soaked spear over it to confirm your war. Through these steps, through these airing of grievences, may one ensure that the will of the gods is followed and that one's war is just, for all reasonable measures have been taken and the gods made aware of your demands and grievances.

The First King Way back in the old days, before we had kings or even knew much about sculpting, there was a village. The villagers would have problems and due to not being able to cooperate very well, would often suffer and be unable to solve them. Eventually, they came to have a corn shortage, for while a few of them had seen to their own gardens and plots, most had taken to relaxing during the hot months and did not move to do their work. Now, those without corn had begun accusing those with corn of having stolen it all and had chosen to fashion weapons with which to chase those with corn out of their homes and village so that they could steal the corn for themselves. A man by the name of Hriudwunsk, for he had been left in the reeds for his parents by some passing elves, sat by an old ash tree on a river bank and lamented his sorrows to the world. He cried how his people now had nothing to eat and how they had no way to keep warm without their huts of dirt and many layered blankets. Well, as he lamented these misfortunes, some of the clay from the riverbank began to murmur and then finally, having had enough, shouted at him 'Know you no peace!?' Having stunned the man into silence, the clay calmed itself and began telling him what to do. First, they went where they saw squirrels on the ground go alone and then dug up the hordes of nuts. Then, once they had those, they took them and ground them with stones so as to make the first flour. Then, once the flour had been wetted and kneaded into dough, they took a bow, a stick, and some old husks and used that to make the first fire not created by Thor earth-shaker. Having now made the first bread and the first fire, the exiles were content for a moment and so set about building a new village for themselves near the clay so they might ask it for its wisdom in future. As time went on, the villagers came to disagree on what animals they should keep and whether they should eat them. Again, they came to the clay and they listed off their many worries and again the clay began to murmur and then finally shout at them to quiet. Irritated by how they had not left it in peace, the clay once more began to answer them, telling them that should they wish to make clothes and feed their children, they should keep goats and should they wish only for short pleasures and eggs, they should keep geese. The clay further went on to explain that all things have their times and their seasons, and that one should not kill an animal unless it has grown fat and the goods which it gives to you no longer please you. Taking the clay's advice, the people did as they were told and they grew rich from their abundance and began to trade with other villages. Now, as it so happened, this wealth made them greedy and covetous of others, so they began to squabble on whether they really ought to share and over bride-prices and the boundaries of land. Once more they went to the clay and once more they complained to it. This time though, it did not murmur. They went on and on arguing and complaining to it until several hours had passed and then they fell silent. When they had done so, the clay finally decided that it had suffered enough. The clay rose from its place on the river bank and formed itself into a mighty man, before then taking a sharp stone from the river bank and a branch from the ash and fashioning himself a mighty axe. Now the people were awed and silent as he then approached them, but one of them chose to air a complaint once more. The clay-born man let out a mighty bellow and charged to cleave the complainer in twain, striking him dead and scaring off all of the villagers. Now, once more, they were driven from their homes and the clay-born was left in peace. There he tasted bread, drank ale, roasted a goose, and warmed by a fire. As for him, it was only fair after having been responsible for such great things. The once more exiles hid in the woods now, but did not leave, for they felt shame and realised their lack of thanks to the clay. As they sat there in sorrow, Hriudwunsk struck upon an idea. 'We must wed the clay to our daughters and sisters, so that we might call upon him as brother and son, as well as give thanks to him for his good services to us.' So, the most beautiful of the village were sorted out and the most beautiful of the beautiful was sent back to seduce the clay-born. As it so happened, the man had drunk so gladly from the jugs and eaten so well, that he had fallen fast asleep by the fire and so when the beautiful girl arrived, she had no issue at all laying with him and claiming him as husband. When the clay awoke, he was furious at such trickery, but impotent to act. He knew that if he struck down the girl now, he would anger the gods and bring divine retribution upon himself, so he went forth and called the villagers to make a compact. 'I will serve you as you will serve me! If you challenge me not, give tribute unto me, and gives me wives, I will see that you are led well and ordered well. I swear this upon the earth from which I formed!' Hearing this, the villagers were overjoyed and quickly set about preparing a great wedding feast and the clay-man was made the first king, from which many great kings descended. Fanigabauran.

The World Explained Where did the world come from and why does it shake?
After Wotan and his brothers killed Ymir, they set the corpse and body on the shoulders of the cow Auðumbla, and so the world is wandering around Ginnungagap and is not physically connected to the world tree. Anyway, earthquakes happen whenever the cow goes to a salt lick and stumble on some rocks, which sometimes results in more land being added or mountains rising. What is the sun and the moon and why does the sun sometimes leave us?
The sun is a dazzlingly beautiful girl named Sunno who goes about her day and is daughter of Mundilfarn. Her brother and husband is the moon, Mena, and the two of them tend to wander around a bit, resulting in the day and night. We get solar eclipses because every now and then the world snake, Jörmundgandr, fetches her down so she can visit with her other husband, Glen. During this time, the world serpent and moon use some of her hairs to pretend to be her but do not do it well, so she always runs back quickly. She will die when Fenrir breaks loose and chases her so he can eat her, but she will be replaced by her daughter, so we are fine. Mena is destined to die protecting her. What are eels?
Eels are just plants. Njördr was one day approached by Rán and Ægir for help because someone kept eating all the seaweed they farmed for fun and their seed stocks were running low, because someone had started breaking in and eating those too now. After trying and failing to help them with the issue, he took up some of the seeds and decided that it would be safer to turn them into fish like creatures so that they can avoid being eaten and set them loose. This worked for a few days, but then humans started catching them all and other beasts took a liking to these new fish, so he was called back and asked to do something else to protect them. Rather than backdown from his admittedly awesome idea, he instead took the remaining ones in hand and drew them into the shape of a wyrm, but smaller, so as to put off would be hunters and fishermen. He also gave them a taste for meat. This created modern eels and is why all eels come from seaweed, as they are just seeds, and why they have no genitals. Where did kings come from?
Some villagers complained to clay enough that it got angry and tried to chase them away. Because they clay had been good for advice, the villagers decided to trick him into binding himself to them through marriages, but as it turned out, no trickery was truly needed as the first woman they sent to sleep with him found him fast asleep by a fire and as such had no issues at all. After that, the clay-man formed a compact with the villagers as he could not escape his wife without angering the gods, thus giving the world its first king. Who are the most important gods?
Sunno (Sol), Mena (Mani), Tiw (Tyr), Wotan (Odin), Þunr (Thor), Friga (Frigg), Iðun (Iðunn), Log (Loki), Bacchus, Freja (Frejya), Frej (Freyr), Skaði, Wull (Ullr), Weor (Vör), Ing (Yngvi), Tuist (Tuisto), Priapos. Why do ship's have penises?
The god Priapos has been known to protect those that honour him and his image, so it is customary to carve it or carry an effigy of it with you when at sea. It was once common for sailor's to wear such images made of gold and silver so they could offer it to Rán and Ægir as payment and because they wished to court Priapos' blessings when in bed with their lovers. When the Priapos heard that the other gods had taken to collecting his tokens and keeping the souls of his sailors, he flew down into their watery hall in a rage and led a revolt there until they agreed to release his men to him and to never more take his tokens as payment. Since then, he has feuded with the gods of the sea and has offered luck and protection to those who seek it, both in bed and at sea. Why do Sunnosdag and Menasdag come first?
Sunno & Mena are twin-gods of the Wanisin, who embody the sun and moon. The moon guards the sun from a giant wolf god that is destined to eat it and has power over dreams and the power of prophecy, helping to manipulate and guide men for his own purposes. The sun provides life and light to the world, helping to bring about the days and watches the fates of men and helps the Wurdin to enforce destinies and fates upon those so tied. She is the queen of the Wanisin and rules with her twin as her king, though she also has a mortal husband too. Why do the Hauhkunos claim descent from Tiw and why did the clay know so much?
Tiw is the god of justice, the one whose spit and blood helped imbue the clay with a sense of good judgement and wisdom that led to it becoming the first king. He is also a god of war, specifically those regarding revenge and blood feuds. It is through his contributions to the clay that it became such a wise king and as the Hauhkunos descend from the clay and the clay from Tiw, they are all his children too. It is through their divine blood and relation to the god of justice that they are so uniquely qualified to lead the Cult of Tiw and are themselves destined to be gods of justice in turn. Why do we honour Wotan and also pay him to stay away?
Wotan is a god of magic, trickery, and knowledge. He beguiles minds and causes men to lose their memories, but is also the one who helps spark inspiration in the arts and science. He is said to have taught man poetry and is responsible for ill-fated coincidences and trips. It is during one of his own journeys that he chose to play a trick on his son, Þunr, as he sought to cross an inlet. Wotan made himself into the shape of an old man and pretended to be a ferryman, using his magics to dampen Þunr's senses so he did not notice he could simply walk around the inlet. He refused Þunr passage and insulted him gravely, finding new provocations and taunts and he watched as Þunr continuously rose to the bait and tried to defend himself against the slings. It was only when Wotan grew tired of his game that he broke the spell and shouted over to his son that he could walk around. It is to avoid such situations that we honour him, but also because he is the king of the Ansin. Why do we celebrate Bacchanalia?
Because Bacchus is the god of good wine, liberty, and freedmen. He has often sought to loosen the bonds of servitude and through his wine fosters equality between those high and low. It is said that those that displease him often suffer from insanity when they taste his wine, as he seeks to deny it to tyrants and those without care. He is also known for avenging the deaths of freedmen, as he views them as his wards. Why do most labour disputes start with an appeal to Log?
Log is famed for his quick tongue, sharp wit, and ability to drive a bargain. Besides inventing the fishing net and siring many of the more monstrous gods and creatures, he has taken it upon himself as Wotan's blood-brother to negotiate on behalf of the Ansin on quite a few occasions. In one such case, he helped strike the deal which secured an Eot's service to build the great defences of Ansgarda, as he managed to trick and goad the Eot into betting that he could finish the defences in a fortnight. To do this though, he needed something of value which the Eot would wish to win, so he told great stories of the beauty of the goddess Freja. When the Eot's horse allowed him to nearly do such a thing, Log undertook the task of transforming into a fiery-mare and luring the horse away and thus stopped the construction efforts through an indirect effort, winning the bet, saving lady Freja from a marriage, and leading to him birthing the six-legged horse-god Slaipur who he gave to Wotan as a mount. Why does Log show up in the home?
Amongst his many traits, he is the god of the hearth. He watches over the fires and holds dominion over the brownies and soot-sprites, who seek his favour so they might find good homes themselves to watchover. He is known far and wide for his efforts to protect and aggrandise his own home of Ansgarda, though he himself is an Eot by birth. Why do we hold festivals to Iðun in the fields?
She tends to the golden apples which grant immortality to those who eat them, she is the goddess of youth and tended lands, the one who protects against pests and rots. Her's is the domain of the home's land, she guards it and tends to it. In order to get her blessing, we make offerings to her as she is given to blessing those who are good with her wary eye and good fortune. An orchard under her care is as safe as can be, though it must be tended by mortal hands too. Why do we wear amulets dedicated to Weor and what do they have to do with flour?
Young children wear these as they are meant to protect them from harm. She is the goddess of foresight and winter stores, protecting the grain we harvest from pests and giving children understanding of the future in the hopes that they might live. Despite this, she is also the goddess of child-deaths, taking taking care of those who die too young and helping to shepherd them to better places or else taking them into her own care. Why do we mark the boundaries of lowlands with Friga's image or name?
She is the goddess of wetlands and it is often to ask her to spare that land from floods. Other times, it is because those lands are good for fowling and it is to ask for her blessing in the hunt, as she is the goddess of water-fowl and the hunting of them. You might also see images of her at home too, as she is the goddess of arranged matches, families, and familial piety. She has been known to strike those down who act in an impious way to their families and to reward those of a good nature and dutiful mindset with happy home lives and good spouses. It is for this reason, she is likely one of the most popular gods around. Why do we use shackles and a spear to represent love and why do we stamp them on wheat cakes?
Freja, goddess of captivity, female beauty, sex, fertility, war, love, and wheat as well. She was given to the Ansin with her brother as hostages in order to end the great war between those tribes of gods, so she has often times concerned herself with those kept in captivity and their treatment. Her war-like nature is also very well known, as she once did make a contest of arms against the great god Þunr and won, as her spear and chariot allowed her much greater speed and reach and she would have speared him through if it were not for his booming shout scaring the Julkat who drew her chariot. These things and her great beauty and care for those in love and in helping spread love have made her symbols the symbols we associate with love. Wheat cakes are made in her honour, as it is said that she spread fields of wheat across the lands as she travelled to her new home amongst the Ansin. It should also be noted, that besides her lightning attacks which won her the field over many a stronger foe, she is also known for her ability to find food in the harshest of places and feed armies through the bounties she forages. Why do we bless foreign king's in the name of Frej rather than Tiw?
Tiw is the fore-father of our kings, but not of the foreigners. Frej has long held the position of a god of rulers, helping to guide them in times of trouble and to promote stability in their lands. He, like his sister, is also a god of fertility, so it can also help to promote many children for rulers, which in turn secure the succession. Finally, his command of weather is useful too, as it can help protect travelling rulers and dignitaries from storms and from being becalmed at sea. Why do we pray to Skaði in the winter and why do we use her image to mountain trails?
She is an Eot and the goddess of mountains and winter. We ask her for kindness in the coldest months, as her frosts can kill livestock, trap people in their homes, and take people in their sleep. We use her image to mark mountain trails, as the mountains are her home. She skis the snowy peaks, waging wars and the wolves are her scouts. She hunts deer, men, and other creatures as she pleases and it does us well to keep her appeased, as she and her bow can easily turn against those who slight her. Her skill with the snows and bow are so great, that when her father was killed by Þunr, she was able to threaten the Ansin within their own home and they feared her ability to make war upon them. It is through this, that she demanded a husband. What does Wull have to do with shots?
While not as famous as Skaði, Wull is the god of marksmanship and gunnery. He is often said to be more skilled than her with the bow, with the two often competing in hunts against each other and in competitions. Are Ing and Tuist the same god?
No. Ing is the god of industry, rather than craft. He is the god associated with the effort itself, responsible for morale, determination, and fortitude against drudgery. Tuist is the god of craft itself, responsible for the forge and workbench, creating things and also being another god of wisdom. He is the one who helps give craftsmen skill and inspiration, while Ing gives them the drive they need to see through their work. It should be noted, that Tuist is said to be the father of all Germans, while Ing is the father of a specific tribe. While their domains are related and they do often work together, they should not be seen as the same. Are towns and villages named for their local gods?
As a general rule, no. What tends to happen is an Eot wanders around and takes a liking to a place, choosing to become the local god if there is none and thus taking on the name of the place. Utgarda-Log is a good example, as the first part of his name is a reference to the place he was a god of, while the second part was his personal name. Often times, we simply do not know the personal name and just use the place name.

An Overview of Extant Sanctioned Privileges Right to Collect Taxes - This is possibly one of the most commonly sought after privileges. It allows persons to collect taxes owed by individuals or groups on behalf of the Landsleidandskapiz, Raikhsleidandskapiz, or even the Swersgesatt in exchange for either a percentage of the tax revenue or a fixed salary. Holding this privilege allows one to employ agents on their own authority to collect the taxes for them, though they are entirely responsible for the actions and behaviours of their agents. In cases where abuse has been found, the privilege can be revoked. Right to Levy Taxes - This privilege is automatically extended to all landowners with allodial title and grants them the right to levy taxes upon those that reside within their lands, so long as these taxes do not conflict with more senior laws or privileges. In cases where abuse has been found, the privilege can be revoked. Right to Collect Tariffs - This is a privilege that is commonly held by large merchant guilds, cities, and powerful lords. It allows persons to collect tariffs owed by individuals or groups on behalf of the Landsleidandskapiz, Raikhsleidandskapiz, or even the Swersgesatt in exchange for either a percentage of the tariff revenue or a fixed salary. Unless more senior laws or authorities interfere, these prices are considered absolute. In cases where abuse has been found, the privilege can be revoked Monopoly - A monopoly grants persons the right to exclusively produce a good or provide a service in an area according to the terms of their monopoly. Tax Exemption - This privilege is most commonly held by families who provide men to the Raikhsharjis or Hauhkunoleiksflutt. It exempts persons from certain taxes that may otherwise be levied against them, though the specifics of which ones they are exempt from may vary depending on jurisdiction, status, law, and terms. Right to Raise Levies (Lieutenancy) - This privilege is automatically extended to all landowners with allodial title and grants them the right to levy military duties upon those that reside within their lands, so long as these levies do not conflict with more senior laws or privileges. The Five Great Virtues Abahaidus/Manliness - Manliness is best exemplified as the diligent pursuit of personal glory. To make widows of young wives, to sire and raise many children, and eat of the flesh of great monsters and men brings glory to you, as it proves your mettle and helps perpetuate your legacy. Actions that bring your name into songs of praise or awe are manly for that reason. Faurasaihwt/Foresight - Foresight is the ability to prepare for that which is not yet come. A wise warrior rests when he is given leave to and eats when he can, for he does not know how long the march will be nor how barren the land. A foolish warrior allows whims to dictate his decisions and thinks not on the future. To set aside grain for coming years, work when you are strong so you might rest when you are weak, and to kill the children of your enemies so as to end a blood feud before it starts, these are the hallmarks of foresight. Hrom/Fame - To hold command over the hearts and minds of men, to be known far and wide. This is the essence of fame. To gain it, one must boast of his achievements and take trophies or have witnesses to speak of your deeds. A strong sword-arm is not the only way to achieve it, as a quick wit too will serve to bring you into high regard by other men and make you feared by your enemies. Its ultimate power is that of command, to form a host and have it march under your banner. Aiz/Honour - To speak the truth and scorn falsehoods, to keep secrets entrusted to you, to honour your promises, to not stoop below your own station but to strive for that which is better, and to fulfil your obligations. These things are what make man honourable and are the basis for all trust and good relations. One without honour can not be trusted to keep his shield in battle nor to not betray you to the enemy when it is most convenient to him. These things must be practised in good times and hard times, not when it is simply easy to. Maiðhaidus/Madness - To behold a cause is lost but to fight for it anyway, to quest for the love of your life and kidnap her in the dark of night, to clash again and again with different means but one purpose despite the odds and failure. The hallmarks of madness are many, but it is best summarised as to pursue your purpose and without regard for your own well-being. To sacrifice all for your purpose when there is no better way of achieving it is an act of madness that brings you into good report and strikes fear into those that oppose you, for no matter the odds you can not be stopped.
