Arthur was momentarily stunned by the ladies statement. After all, she was probably just a maid or hand servant or something similar. What could be the harm in letting her know the greatness of his Emperor and the Crown Prince?
"Well, er, the Emperor is a...fair man," he briefly wondered what else to say when it came to him suddenly. "There was one time, I got into some troubles with some of the other guards. Gambling in the barracks and such. I had racked up some debts that were suddenly being called in by my comrades. My monthly salary couldn't cover it, and I had burned through the majority of the money I had saved away. These guardsmen, they gave me an ultimatum and attempted to extort me. I was in rather dire straights. I went to bed the night before their deadline, hardly got any sleep and was dreading the next morning when I would see them. But, when I woke up, the men I owed money too were long gone, their names stripped from the regimental roll and all their belongings vanished. I thought it was a blessing from God, but that afternoon the Emperor himself summoned me to him. I thought about deserting, but I decided the shame of such a thing would be worse than whatever punishment the Emperor could give me.
When I met with His Majesty, he explained to me what happened to Mannerheim and Burnside, the main two who had extorted me. He said that he didn't ming gambling among his soldiers, but only in small amounts while being responsible. However, he said that to turn on a comrade for material wealth was unforgivable in his mind. So, he let me off with 3 months of helping the groundskeepers, polishing floors, working in the gardens, making meals with the kitchen staff. After 3 months he took me back into his service and I later learned that he had paid off my debts to the rest of my comrades."
Arthur looked at the lady with a fierce gleam in his eyes, "the Emperor is a great man. He helped me when I was at my lowest, even when I didn't deserve it. I am forever in his debt now, but that is something I will not complain about. Some of his actions may seem suspect to foreigners, but the Emperor was a soldier once. He cares for his men like he cares for his people and his empire. He always attempts to act in their best interests, even when some think him wrong."
